Small Business Saturday - Approximate Notions

I had a lovely surprise visit yesterday with a woman who is currently branching off on her own - Felicia Hughes of Approximate Notions. Felicia popped in to say hello after seeing ELLE featured on the most recent issue of The-E-List Newsletter! Check it out here!...

After raising three boys, who are now in college, she has more time to tap in to her creative side. With a strong passion for everything Equine - Felicia designs and hand makes decorative pillows and valances inspired by this passion. Now, at first, when Felicia said "Equine" pillows, I immediately pictured those photo realistic and multi-colored horse portraits, which REALLY aren't my style. When she showed me a few of her samples, I was pleasantly surprised to see a whimsical representation that, at first glance, reads more scroll-like than Equine. In addition to hand making and screen printing her pillows, she is also able to offer hand painted monogramming in various metallic earth tones. HOW GLAM!

Take a look at the one she left with me....

I hope to get more of these in soon, and we are putting our heads together to come up with a Fabric Painting Demo so people can see how it's done, and also so they can place orders for custom monogrammed items.. just in time for the holidays! Check out the EVENTS page at www.elledesignstudio.net for more details, or contact the Studio directly.

Small Business Saturday - The Upstairs Kitchen

I had the pleasure of becoming acquainted with a fellow Chester Merchant this past weekend - the owner of The Upstairs Kitchen, Sarah Jansen. A former architectural designer, turned healthful gourmet chef, Sarah's passion for "getting back to basics" was evident after being in her presence for mere minutes. Located on the 2nd floor of a historic downtown 1880s building, The Upstairs Kitchen will be offering classes led by local health conscious chefs, ranging from working with basic greens and root vegetables to more focused specialties like cleansing and eating raw.

After swinging by the Studio, she warmly invited me + my raw food chef friend, Lisa, over to see the new space. Upon entering The Upstairs Kitchen, which is also her home, a wave of curious excitement took over. Layers of crisp white crown molding - Dramatically oversized kitchen island - And my favorite part... A custom farm table, designed by Sarah herself, is cleverly armed with two removable rustic beams with routed out holes just large enough for the table legs to fit in, which allows the table to match the height of the Island in order to make one HUGE table for special classes + dinners... can you say, Brilliant?!

A full schedule of classes for 2012 is in the works, but here are some classes that have happened, or have yet to happen, this year...

Small Business Saturday - Intro

I am so excited to introduce the very FIRST edition of my new weekly blog post - Small Business Saturday! As some of you may know, this is the second year that this shopping "holiday" will be practiced - however, this is my FIRST year of being included : )

American Express launched this campaign last year in order to encourage consumers to "shop small" during the Thanksgiving weekend, the traditional kickoff of holiday shopping. Sandwiched between the Black Friday giant, and the increasingly popular Cyber Monday, the hope is that Small Business Saturday (held on November 26th this year) will remind consumers how vital small businesses are to our economy. If we choose to enjoy the little guys, but save time/money by only spending with the big guys and online retailers, we will eventually lose the small businesses and everything we love about them.

Why Small Business?
- Independent local businesses employ a wide array of supporting services... architects, designers, cabinet shops, sign makers, contractors - the list goes on and on!

- Opportunities grow for local accountants, insurance brokers, computer consultants, attorneys, advertising agencies, and web developers.

- Local retailers carry a much higher percentage of locally-made goods than the big box stores, which in turn, creates more jobs for local artisans/designers/producers.

- Small manufacturers rely on local retailers to give their products a chance. Local retailers are more free to take a risks with a new manufacturer or product that is not tied to a national sales plan.

- Sales of the 500 largest corporations grew 700% in the past 20 years, yet those same corporations are now firing more people than they hire despite record profits.

- Local owners with their life savings invested in their businesses, have a natural interest in the longterm health of their community.

- When asked to name our favorite, can't live without, restaurant, cafe, or shop, we almost always cite a unique local business. We embrace the idea of distinctiveness, but often forget their survival depends on our patronage.

Now, I'm not knocking the big guys. I do enjoy excursions to the big box stores, and occasionally shopping the ever popular Amazon type websites... However, I make it a point to go slightly out of my way, and spend a little more at a locally owned small business every month. An incredible pioneer in this movement is Cinda Baxter, founder of the 3/50 Project. The simple concept behind the 3/50 project - "pick 3, spend 50, save your local economy" - puts the power back in the hands of the consumer. Check out ELLE DESIGN STUDIO on the Connecticut Supporters Page, under Chester CT... yea!

3 What three independently owned businesses would you miss if they disappeared? Stop in. Say hello. Pick up something that brings a smile. Your purchases are what keeps those businesses around.

50 If half the employed population spent $50 each month in locally owned independent businesses, it would generate more than $42.6 billion in revenue. Imagine the positive impact if 3/4 of the employed population did that.

68 For every $100 spent in locally owned independent stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll, and other expenditures. If you spend that at a national chain, only $43 stays here. Spend it online, and nothing comes home.

1 The number of people it takes to start the trend... you.

My goal with the Small Business Saturday posts, is to help raise awareness and draw attention to the awe inspiring backbone of our country - small businesses! Stay tuned every week, for a featured Small Business, in Chester, in Connecticut, and all around our nation.

Join the movement!
Shop small... shop local.

Niche Modern

Niche Modern began as most creative and successful companies do - with a pure, and simple idea. Jeremy Pyles & Mary Welch had a storefront in NYC that they needed to fill with a product. Inspiring lighting was their item of choice, however, they couldn't find anything on the market that was quite that. So, they decided to take a stab at it themselves. And Niche Modern was born!

The Stamen Modern Pendant Light was their first design taken from sketch, to prototype, to finished product. After being so well received at the 2005 International Contemporary Furniture Fair, they decided to keep on this path of developing their own lighting, rather than displaying and selling the work of other companies.

I am madly in love with their product, and am SO excited to be specifying the Circular 5 Modern Chandelier for a project I am working on out in Colorado. The sensual shape of each individual orb paired with the beautiful amber colored glass, will be the main focal point of the two story Great Room - other than the spectacular view of the Rocky Mountains!

ahhhhh.... lovely <3

Our 1st Picking Trip! - Upstate New York

My husband and I went on our very first "picking trip" to upstate New York a few weeks ago to visit an old industrial warehouse, which was once a button factory. Amidst all the rubble, crunching of broken glass, piles upon piles of buttons, shopping carts full of rollerskates, and DIRT - we found some awesome circa 1930s industrial pallets and carts! A full truckload made the trip home with us, along with a few interesting smalls. After a two and a half hour journey home, we barely pulled into the driveway and we had already put our heads together to figure out how we wanted to refinish them...

Before and Afters of the finished pallets and carts to be posted next week!

I'm Back in the Saddle Again!

After what feels like a year since my last post, I am officially BACK! So much has happened in the past few months, I almost don't know where to begin... For starters, I'd like to announce that am now operating my own teeny tiny design studio & retail shop out of a sweet little building in Downtown Chester, CT. That's right, I have taken the great leap into small business ownership! It feels like it happened so quickly, however, this has always been a dream of mine, so I already knew how I wanted certain things to be, and look, and run - everything else is still being figured out! In a mere two months, we designed, renovated, and furnished, what is now ELLE DESIGN STUDIO!

Here are some shots I took before & after the big change. Professional photos are being taken once once I have everything just right... I need to set a date soon so that my perfectionism can back off : )
